the co-located Nilesat and Atlantic Bird4A satellites at 7 / 7.2
degrees West, these satellites are easily receivable
throughout North Africa,
Middle East, and most of the Mediterranean on a small dish, but with
notable differences in the official footprints between Atlantic Bird 4A
and Nilesat.
For expats in Malta, Cyprus, Southern Italy, Costa Blanca,
Costa Brava and Costa del Sol, there should be no issues in getting
good strong signals. In Cyprus and Malta the signals are particularly
strong allowing small satellite dishes to be used with ease.
The problem when going further North in Europe is that the Atlantic
Bird 4A signal deteriorates rapidly outside the official footprint area.
This makes fringe
reception tricky
and the further North you go the worse it gets, reception becomes very
difficult for
example within the UK which is on the outer
edges of the fringe, for people living in the UK they would require a
very large dish for clear reception
even in the south of the UK, such dishes are common place in mainland
Europe and North Africa but within the UK planning permission will
usually be required for very large dishes.
Reports indicate that
the dish size in London for stable reception is at very least 240cm, if
rain and other atmospheric effects were to be considered this would
suggest that more likely a 300cm dish would be needed and this would
cost a considerable amount of money to install, not to mention the
planning permission required.
